Long Reach Celebrates Pi Day – Raising $1,400.00 for Grassroots

Pi is one of the most famous constants of our mathematical world. Pi is the number 3.1415… This unique number is celebrated worldwide on March 14th, which is thoughtfully called Pi Day!

LRHS celebrated Pi Day last year by raising awareness about suicide prevention hosting a 3-on-3 basketball tournament for Grassroots, Howard County’s 24-hour Crisis Intervention Center and Homeless Shelter. Grassroots is a resource to individuals and families in need of immediate assistance with a personal, mental health, family, or shelter crisis. Individuals may call for a variety of reasons including suicide, family and relationship problems, shelter needs, violent or threatening domestic situations, loneliness or depression, and chemical dependency issues, among others. Anyone in need of immediate assistance may walk in to the agency at any time to see a counselor. An appointment is not needed to receive services. There is no fee for any of Grassroots services.

The Math classes showed a video, Don’t Do Nothing (DDN). DDN is a high school initiative that focuses on suicide awareness and prevention. This program teaches students that suicide is preventable and encourages them to “don’t do nothing” when they think a friend is struggling and might need adult help. It emphasizes that teachers, counselors, coaches and trusted adults are the first resources for help, but that Grassroots Crisis Hotline is also available 24-7.

On, March 22, 2019, LRHS will host it’s second annual Hoops for Roots: 3-on3 basketball tournament to help raise money to fund a day for the 24-hour crisis center at Grassroots. If you would like to donate your time at the event, sponsor a team, or donate to the cash prize for the winning team please contact the school and ask to speak with one of the Hoops for Roots Sponsors.
