RESCHEDULED Junior Interview Day, March 22

Tue, 02/28/2017 - 12:47pm

As a result of the weather forecast, Junior Interview Day has been RESCHEDULED for Wednesday, March 22nd.

We want Juniors to be able to effectively prepare for this important event, so we hope that this new date will allow students to do that. All Juniors will receive a pass with their appointment time on Monday, March 20th.

Thank you for your understanding, and we look forward to the interviews next week!

Junior Interview Day is an event held every year for Junior students that allows all Juniors to participate in a mock interview with a community business leader. Completing this interview process is a part of Howard County graduation requirements, and it assists students in building interview skills as well as resume writing skills. These skills are essential for all students to work and improve upon as they become college and career ready. This year’s Junior Interview Day will be March 15th.

Juniors have been working on creating their resumes for Interview Day through their English classes and should have them completed by the end of this week. ALL Juniors need to turn in a completed resume to their English teacher by this Friday the 3rd in order to participate in the Interview Day! Next week, school counselors will be presenting a lesson on interviewing skills to students in order to help them prepare and understand what’s needed to be successful during their interview (this includes appropriate attire, body language, and preparing for typical interview questions).

*Students will receive a pass on Monday, March 13th that will indicate their scheduled Interview time for Wednesday. Students should arrive dressed to school on the 15th in appropriate interview attire regardless of their appointment time (students are not given time to change before the interview). Students will report to the Media Center just before their interview time, and staff will be present to check them in, ensure they have a copy of their resume, and introduce them to their Interviewer for the day. This is an exciting and rewarding day for Juniors. Although many students are nervous when they arrive, they leave confident, with very helpful feedback from professionals in the industry. We are looking forward to Junior Interview Day this year!

Here are some tips and check-in’s you can do with your child to help them prepare for Junior Interview Day on March 15th:

  • Ensure they have their resume completed and turned in by Friday, March 3rd
  • Help them plan out appropriate attire to wear for Junior Interview Day. Sometimes this means borrowing from a relative or friend (we do not expect students to purchase everything new). Males should be wearing dress shoes, slacks, a collared dress shirt, a belt, and a tie. Females should be wearing dress shoes (heals under 2in), a knee-length dress skirt or dress pants, and a blouse.
  • Review the Junior Interview Packet they will receive next week. This will include commonly asked interview questions, and you can practice responses your child might give for these questions.
  • Confirm that your child receives an Interview Appointment Time slip on Monday the 13th. Interview times will also be posted on large poster paper outside the Media Center. Remind your child that it is their responsibility to remember their appointment time and arrive on time! Students are required to participate in Junior Interview Day for graduation.

Thank you for your support!
