Long Reach High School PTSA Newsletter

The Next PTSA meeting is on Monday, April 9th at 7:00pm in the Student Services Center.  We’d love to see some new faces and hear new ideas as we continue to support the LRHS students, staff, and parents.

PTSA News

  • Is your student prepared to take the SAT in May or June? Advanced SAT Prep will help students gain a better understanding of the SAT and, more importantly, learn how to answer more SAT questions correctly to increase their score.  We will also help students with an in-depth review of the Math and English concepts required to destroy the SAT.  This class is sponsored by the LRHS PTSA and a portion of all proceeds will be donated to the association. The cost of the class is $200.  More information can be found on their website https://www.advancedsatprep.com/
  • Do you have a teen driver?  Did you know that Elite Driving School is the only AAA approved Driving School in Maryland?  The next 2 week class begins on April 9th and a new class starts each month.  You can get more information at http://drivingschool.net/
  • The Long Reach PTSA is proud to offer an ACT Prep Class for Juniors!  The Class will be held on Tuesday, May 29th and Thursday, May 31st from 5:30pm – 9:30 pm.  The cost of the class is $159 and if you register by May 22nd, you can save $10.  To register, visit https://theanswerclass.com/
  • Not sure which test you should prep for?  Find out by taking Kaplan’s combo practice test.  You’ll get to try the content, timing, and format of each test so you can determine which exam to focus on.  The practice exam will be on May 5, 2018 from 9am-1pm at Long Reach HS.  The cost is $20 per student, with the proceeds going to the PTSA.  You can also see your school counselor for a fee waiver.  Register here.
  • Talking to your children about traumatic events can be difficult.  These resources can support parents and community members in speaking to children outside of school hours.  HCPSS schools are equipped with resources to support children during the school day.

Community Events

  • HoCo Hacks! - If you're interested in computer science, come to the fourth annual HoCo Hacks Hackathon! High school students from around the county will gain programming experience by spending the day coding a project that fits the theme presented at the event. The hackathon includes a presentation by guest speaker Dr. Singh, Associate Professor of Computer Science at Georgetown University. Students may work in groups of up to three members, and food will be provided. The hackathon will be held at Centennial High School on April 14th, from 10am-5pm. For more information and to sign up for a spot, go to the hocohacks.weebly.com!

  • The Columbia Clippers and the Columbia Association are proud to once again sponsor the Howard County Invitational Swimming Championships which will be held on Sunday, April 15, 2018 at Howard Community College.  This meet is open to all Howard County Public High School Students.  There are no qualifying times for this meet.  For each county high school participating, the Clippers will donate money towards that school’s after prom party.  Additional money will be given for first, second, and third places.  Past winners tend to have higher participation, not necessarily the best swimmers.  Having more swimmers increases participation in the many events offered.  For additional information, see the Facebook page here.

  • The Horizon Foundation is sponsoring Open Streets 2018 in the Long Reach community on Saturday, May 5th from 1:00 – 4:00 pm.  Think “street festival” with the inside lane of Tamar Drive closed off so people can safely bike and walk between the LRHS parking lot, and SJBC at the other end. At each location we will have music, food, and lots of family activities. It’s a free event!  More information here.
  • Howard County Drug Free -  HC DrugFree's Teen Advisory Council (TAC) meeting will be held at The Barn (Teen Center) in the Oakland Mills Village Center on April 16th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  TAC meets once a month and is open to all Howard County high school teens.
